stage候台BACK presents DEEP STORAGE PROJECT by. Kristian von Hornsleth

May 6th 2009 18h - 22h

All beings so far have created something beyond themselves; and do you want to be the ebb of this great flood and even go back to the beasts rather than overcome man?

Kristian von Hornsleth is collecting blood samples and dna of people who are dedicated Hornsleth Art Lovers. In earlier times of civilization we would call it a tribal ritus. A ritus in order to manifest the tribal existence in a far away mythological future. Hornsleth himself as the shamane of his own people conserves their cultural existence.
Hornsleth claims the position of an artist as an "Übermensch".

Weihai 696 Event official presser “696艺术联欢会 新闻通告”

Here is the official announcement of the Weihai Road 696 Art Studios event:

Intervention #3 @ Shanghai Art Studios, Weihai Road 696

Happy Together- 25 artists present multi disciplinary works for two day event

Date: April 18-19, 1pm to 8pm daily

In the Summer of 2006 a small artists colony took over the abandoned premises of an old opium den, later turned into a factory, in downtown Shanghai. Now around 40 diverse practioners have built functioning workshops in the building. 696 Weihai Road has a very diverse mix of inhabitants, including painters, sculptors, dancers, singers, bands, film directors, photographers , actors, arts activists, journalists, fashion designers, professional travelers, an underwear designer, child arts specialists, a wedding photography team, a foreign martial arts master, an animation company, an outdoor clothing and gear shop, architects, and also a few experimental gallery spaces. As the downtown location of the building is in Shanghai’s ‘golden area,’ just a few minutes away from the city’s top malls and hotels, developers have long been threatening to take over the building. The tenants have been keeping up a three year campaign to maintain Weihai 696’s function as a creative space, through individual and group actions. To celebrate the fact that the building has not yet been torn down or converted into a commercial development the building hosts an annual open door event, to showcase work, allow performers to show their work in public in a relaxed setting to friends and visitors, and this year should also see some documentary work and other experimental pieces. Due to the anarchic nature of the setting and the work in progress, and for other obvious reasons, not all can yet be revealed! Currently around 25 of the workshops will present open doors, installations and around 5 musical performers have been slated in to play at various venues within the complex. A map will be provided to guests, and signs relating to the various events will be posted by the main gate, or chalked on the walls. Refreshments should be provided at various locations throughout the events, and there are also numerous 24 hour stores nearby where visitors can purchase snacks and beverages. For anyone wishing for further details in English please keep an eye on the site www.shanghaieye.net

BACK Gallery and TEAPOT Gallery (Cologne/Germany) are pleased to announce their collaboration on an exhibition of new works by Sylvie Tillmann. The exhibition will run from the 28th of February through the 6th of April 2009 at stage候台BACK Gallery, located at Room 301, 3F, Building 11, 696 Weihai Lu near Shaanxi Lu, Shanghai China.

Sylvie Tillmann whose interests are both in the understanding of the body as a projection surface as well as the meaning of the expression of her thoughts while using the bodies as the conveyor of the soul. Both aspects concentrate themselves on the fact, that there is only a frightening little space for our commonly held beliefs of beauty. In her photographs we see humans who do not identify themselves with these paradigms. Unadorned and combined with eccentric accessories, they lead the viewer towards the fact that the boundaries of the aesthetics have room for expansion. Candyfloss overboard is Tillmanns first exhibithion on Mainland China. She lives and works in Cologne / Germany. For this occasion an exhibition catalogue will be published by stage候台BACK Gallery Shanghai and TEAPOT Gallery (Cologne/Germany)

Limbo Grid - press release

Limbo Grid film stills
In his installation Limbo Grid, Rolf A. Kluenter sets a film projection, which documents a variety of nightshift scenes at central Shanghai's construction sites, against a net-like structure made of the fragile blackened Nepalese handmade paper that hangs down from the ceiling and divides the space into two rooms. The space of stage候台BACK at 696 Weihai Road invites the visitor to walk through the installation, watching the film, feeling the structure and experiencing the blackness. This might be Kluenter's intended process, which inextricably interweaves transparency and denseness; fragility and strength. A Limbo is a space that is between two places. It is a place or state of oblivion to which persons or things are regarded as being relegated when cast aside, forgotten, past, or out of date. Spiritually and in scholastic theology, limbo is an extramundane region where certain classes of souls were supposed to await their judgment. With the exhibition Limbo Grid, stage候台BACK proudly announces the soft opening of the future collaboration between stage候台BACK Shanghai 696 and TEAPOT Gallery, from Cologne in Germany. stage候台BACK自豪地宣布LIMBO GRID展览将成为上海 stage候台BACK 与德国科隆的 TEAPOT Gallery 之间未来协作的软开幕。

Sound Artist Andy Guhl “ 聲藝術家 ”

Andy Guhl (*1952, St. Gallen, Switzerland) is a pioneer sound artist and one of the fathers of European electronic experimental music.
As part of the music formation Voice Crack and Poire_Z, he has strongly influenced multiple generations of musicians and artists of the international underground and noise movements. With over 30 released albums as well as performances and exhibitions in over 20 countries, Andy Guhl continues his prolific artistic production despite a widely publicized split from partner Norbert Möslang in 2002.
Andy Guhl started his career in 1972 in improvisational free jazz together with Norbert Möslang. In 1983 they started cracking daily electronics and developed it to the cracked everyday electronics. By manipulating these objects to produce sounds, they broke down the traditional barrier between daily items and musical instruments and their acoustic perception. In the1990s the duo expanded their reach into visual representation of acoustic phenomena with several installations, including the "Sound Shifting" installation they presented at the Venice Biennial 2001 upon invitation of the Swiss Art Council. Since 2002 Andy Guhl has branched out on his own with ever more innovative installations using audio-visual feedback in analogue electronic systems which he calls “The Instrument”, the expanded cracked everyday electronics. "For me physics is a musical building block," says Andy Guhl, "to allow you to also see what you're hearing."

April 19 2008 - December 10 2008 -A lot to catch up!

2008 was the birth year of
stage候台BACK Shanghai, an artspace from an artist for artists. The first event happened on April 19th 2009 together with the yearly "open door" event at 696 Weihai Lu. I wrote back then:
I proudly announce the opening of stage候台BACK gallery, a space from an artist for artists in Shanghai, China. We had our #0 opening last Saturday and it was a big success, thanks to all of you who came by.And:The idea to open an art space blossomed in the fall of 2007 with the wish to be a part of Shanghais fast growing urban culture. Especially in our days, cultural and intellectual exchange between the West and the East are of great importance. This is what this space stands for: FREEDOM - ART - PARTY.

stage候台BACK
decided to go "online" on December 10 2008, finally!

Introduction
stage候台BACK is an art space from an artist for artists and was founded by German artist Susanne Junker in April 2008 in Shanghai, China. Susanne has been traveling to China for the last past 5 years and observed the growing urban culture in Shanghai as well as the fast forward moving Chinese art scene. Her believe is grounded in cultural and intellectual exchange between the East and the West, which can offer new territories and outlooks for both sides. Apart from the great importance of education, the program concentrates on knowledgeable discoveries as well as surprising, even shocking displays to create strong reactions from the visiting audience. Reaching the status of difference in selection and presentation is one of the goals to achieve in China on many levels. stage候台BACK makes its first steps towards individuality in art and culture. stage候台BACK will collaborate with artists of all mediums from abroad as well as local based artists. Cultural institutions should have their place at stage候台BACK as well as private owned galleries who are looking for an exchange. stage候台BACK is located in the center of Shanghai in "the newish underground artist enclave at 696 Weihai Lu", an old building that at one time was an opium den build in the 30ties of last century and most recently an auto parts warehouse. About 40 artist studios are located in 696 Weihai Lu as well as a handful new and emerging galleries. stage候台BACK is looking forward to up and coming projects spreading until spring 2009 that includes artists from Germany, France and Cameron and further on the collaboration between stage候台BACK and TEAPOT Gallery from Cologne/ Germany.
