Dinosaurs are coming to Shanghai soon! 恐龙即将着陆上海!

Shanghai is a spoiled town with anything and everything under the sun, towered over by its gigantic monumental sky scrapers kissing almost the fire ball. Whatever you are thinking of  is available and reachable anytime, all the time, all times, 24h/7! The biggest, fastest, tallest, most, best, better ...are familiar words that lurk behind all street corners in the city. The middle kingdom, the country with the biggest population on this planet. And this population is getting taller and bigger with intensive help of all this wonderful food coming from the other big country, the USA.

In the local art world "they" like to use the same expressions: most famous, or richest or most expensive artist, or the artist with most assistance and most workers, or the artist with the biggest studio, meaning the biggest spitting out art factory, masturbating the art market. "Shanghai contemporary",  the "biggest" art fair in China is coming up soon (Sept 9-12), hmmm, biggest? Wasn't that already Art Hong Kong this year? 

Anyhow, this seems all quite contagious and to play the "big mode" as well this fall, stage候台BACK  invited Barbara Anna Husar, an Austrian artist with a big brain and a big smile. In her luggage: HUGE dinosaurs. Those Rexas will lay humongous eggs all over Shanghai, especially on the  Expo site, the biggest world expo with the most visitors ever seen!

stage候台BACK  is small artspace, located in an underground warehouse (Weihai Lu 696). Introducing innovative artists in Shanghai. 

Ms. Husar will use stage候台BACK   to actively work in that space. Her dinosaurs will grow slowly in the for her new environment. We will have an opening on September 6 that will be work in progress, "unfinished" so it seems but more so it will act as an invitation in an oasis of creation, exchange and dialogue during Shanghais biggest, best, most etc. "art week" in September. Step by step her works will slip of their eggs and purr: Less is more!

恐龙即将着陆上海!

       上海是这样一个在阳光下万物娇纵的都市,欲以她座座拔地而起的摩天大楼要去亲吻天上的火球。无论你想什么,她都拥有并且可以提供,时时刻刻!
       最大,最快,最高,最好,更好……这样的词语流淌在上海的每个街角。这个中央的国度,拥有着这个星球最多的人口。而且,这个人口在其来自如美国这样的“大国”的“高品质”食物的帮助下,在变得更高更大。


       在本地艺术圈,“他们”喜欢用这样的表达法:最有名、最富有、最昂贵的艺术家,或者一个拥有最大助理团队最多工人的艺术家,或者一个拥有最大工作室的艺术家。是否意味最大程度地呕吐着这个艺术工厂?或自慰着这个艺术市场?“上海当代艺术展”,又一“最大”的艺术盛世马上要在上海拉开序幕(9月9日至9月12日)……“最大”?今年不是已经被香港艺博会摘得?


        无论怎样,这个“最大”病菌的确有其传染性。于是这个秋天,stage候台BACK迎来了Barbara Anna Husar,一位有着“最大”的大脑和“最大”的微笑的奥地利艺术家。在她的行李箱里隐藏着:巨型恐龙。这些叫REXA的特种恐龙将会在全上海产蛋,尤其是那个有着迄今为止最多游客的最大的世博区!

        stage候台BACK是这样一个的艺术空间,隐秘于‘地下’的老工厂(威海路696号)。在上海为真正拥有创造性的艺术家提供空间和其它可能性。
        Husar女士会使用stage候台BACK进行她的创造工作。她的恐龙们也会在这个新环境里孕育长大。我们将在9月6日正式为这一进行着的,“待完成”的项目开幕。尤其是在上海这个弥漫着“最”气氛的环境里,我们希望它不是一个形式上的老套的浮夸的开幕酒会,而是一种企图在真正创造性的绿洲上进行的一点交流与对话。在9月的第二周,一步一步地,她的工作将会破开恐龙蛋,咕噜咕噜叫到:简才是大!

Artist visit #3 - Konstantin Bayer - Galerie Eigenheim - Weimar / Germany

Heading to Weimar in Thuringen to visit Konstantin Bayer. This artist visit # 3 turned into a multiple artist meeting and partly into a aspsiK conference.  I came from Bavaria, Chris and Kerstin of  inspiration lounge came from Cologne and stage候台BACK   artist Thomas Rusch came from Hamburg. People and places, places and people...

Konstantin was the initiator of M120 and also created a little space, "Eigenheim Shanghai" on the new Yongkang Lu art street in Shanghai, during his stay early Summer this year.

去往魏玛拜访Konstantin Bayer. 这次艺术家拜访之3变成了多为艺术家聚会以及aspsiK的讨论。来自巴伐利亚的我,来自克隆inspiration lounge的Chris和Kerstin,来自汉堡的stage候台BACK的艺术家Thomas Rusch. 许多人,许多地方⋯⋯ 

Konstantin是M120这个特别项目的发起人。而且,在他逗留上海的夏天在永康路上创造了一个叫"Eigenheim Shanghai" 的小艺术空间。

The intensive and positive cooperation between Eigenheim and stage候台BACK  for M120 nourished my curiosity to discover the original Eigenheim Gallery in Weimar which is host to new talents like Lars Wild and Maxim Lichtenwald who are recently in residence. 

stage候台BACK  is looking forward  to cooperate in partner projects with Galerie Eigenhiem in the following month.

Artist visit # 2 - Thomas Palme and the lake of the arts


Coming from Paris and traveling south east to the beautiful region of the Allgäu (Bavaria, Germany), the home of artist Thomas Palme. 

He offered to share a secret destination that lays high up in the mountains: the "lake of the arts" (See der Künste).

As the legend tells us since centuries, artists from all over the region pilgrim to this lake that has apparently magical power and can influence creativity and spirituality. After a long march thru the woods and a steep climb, this beautiful lake shows up in front of our eyes like an apparition of an unreal and mystic time.

And now,  with all those sudden scintillations, we just say: DON'T CRY,  WORK!


艺术家拜访之2——Thomas Palme和艺术之湖

离开巴黎一路朝东南方,来到了一个美丽的地区——Allgäu(位于德国巴伐利亚区)。艺术家Thomas Palme的家。他和我分享了一个秘密的地方,一个在山顶之上的所在:“艺术之湖”。(见图1)有一个传说述说了几个世纪,即这个地区的艺术家如果真心朝圣这片湖,他们被赋予魔力以及激发不断创作的神秘之源。经过长时间的行走和攀登,这片美丽的湖乍然呈现我们眼前,如同进入一个超现实的神秘时空。
此刻,我们只想说:不哭,工作!

Artist Visit # 1 - Bili Bidjocka Fiction # 3 at Maubuisson

is on tour in France and Germany taking pleasure to meet good friends, eat good food and drink "apéros".

It was a true pleasure to spend an afternoon with dear Bili Bidjocka in the stunning location of l'abbaye de Maubuisson where his show FICTION # 3 is on view till August 30th.

10张ID-Identity系列的作品(规格40x60cm,Lambda印刷)排列构成自己的一个角落。创作时间为2006年到2010年。

ID-Identity is a work in progress photo series of women who are applying make up on their faces but without being able to look into a mirror. The lens of the camera is acting as the "imaginary" mirror. This series documents the state of daily appearance of the "in between" that is invisible in our society.

In a world of photo retouched beauty, ID-Identity shows in a realistic form the way of the understanding of beauty individually of every portrait shot. 

The action of applying make up isn't a conventional way of beauty. It can look disturbing and strange. It creates interesting moments during the shoot while the photographed woman shares an intimate moment of her life.

ID-Identity是一个摄影系列,模特的女性们在没有镜子的情境下以各自方式化妆。摄像机可以作为一个想象的镜子。这个系列试图纪录的是在我们社会日常表象下不可见的‘中间状态’。
ID-Identity期待观者重新认识‘美’,尤其通过对每张独立的摄影的个体体验。

这一化妆行为当然不是传统的方式去展示‘美’。更或者,她看起来难看或古怪。然而,她创造了一些个很有趣的女性们化妆瞬间,并同时的,让观者与这些被摄影的女性暗自分享了她们及其私秘的某个瞬间。

We installed art works. In the rubble. On destructed walls. People who still live there came outside to look and ask questions during the installation. People who don't live there anymore came as well. A woman pointed out a shelter where she lived for 34 years.

The sun set and the audience grew. Since we were not able to advertise this guerilla art event because of weather reasons and of course of  the guerilla part of it, - still about 250 locals, visitors, art lovers and artists attended the event.

Shanghai has never seen anything like this. And to proof it right, art doesn't need withe walls and art can be a tool for communication on all levels.

一个未经任何官方许可的艺术事件——“M120 莫干山路120再创造!”在2010年7月18日的世博会期间的中国上海竟然发生了!奇迹真的发生了!
我们展览艺术。在一堆废墟中。在一面破损的墙体。老居民在我们安装时也出来看并问了许多问题。不住在那里的人也来了。一个妇人指着一处废墟,她曾经在那里住了34年。
太阳下落,越来越多人来了。因为我们无法大力去告知这个游击式的活动,因为天气也因为它的游击气质。然而,仍有250多老居民,艺术热爱者,艺术家们赶到现场。
感谢每一个来的人。感谢那些参加的艺术家们。我们有那么来自那么多不同国家的朋友一起。上海很少体验这样特殊的一个事件。再一次证明,艺术并不一定需雪白的墙,同时,艺术可以成为任何一个阶层/群体里沟通的工具。
感谢Konstatin Bayer一直如此保持清醒和信仰!

M120 – Moganshan re-used!, ‘莫干山路120再创造!

The rubble site, 120 Moganshan Road in Shanghai, China, is located right next to the gallery district in Shanghai, the so called M50 on 50 Moganshan Road. Just over 10 years ago, artists and galleries moved to an old textile factory located at this address. This  complex was threatened with demolition for years while newly build high rises changed the surrounding of this art oasis. Eventually it became more commercial over the years and could so secure its existence.

The modern apartment buildings and new galleries also had other neighbors, the residents at number 120. A typical chinese neighborhood, just as we imagine it in the west. Small lane houses  meandered in narrow alleys. Laundry dries above our heads and people cook their meals in the entry ways of their houses. The inhabitants lived in this area for many decades. Even still, when M50 was already established with its cafes and bookshops and the loving art visitors from the West.

 Now it is over. 120 Moganshan Road has been destroyed. Most residents are gone, still one graffiti screams off the wall: " Ha ha! We are still here!" Lost shoes can be found in the rubble, glimpses of wallpaper are visible on certain walls. A daily scene in Shanghai.

Konstantin Bayer, German artist and initiator of the gallery "Eigenheim" in Weimar / Germany knew this neighborhood very well. He curated a small exhibition space, the "Island 6 shack", during his university exchange program in 2008 at 120 Moganshan Road. This established a continuous dialogue between tradition, art, East and West. Where this exchange took place is now a gaping hole.

 After two years, Konstantin met  some of the remaining residents again. The already existing mutual sympathy was still in place. In his familiar manner to create art in urban living spaces Konstantin is now planning a 24 hour art project on this site along together with a handful of renowend Shanghai galleries. 2000 m2 demolition land will be revived in order to make space for art and to point  out the rapid development and change of life in China as well calling attention on the specific characteristics of temporary urban structure. The demolition site appears now  as a counterpart to sparkling Shanghai with its new Expo site and countless renovated facades all around the city.

Generally it is expected of  art and artists to identify with the current progressive urban development. But especially artists and creative people often draw the short straw, however, work space gets destroyed or simply turns out to be unaffordable. "M120 -  Moganshan re-used" is an example of the positive exchange between people from different parts of the world using art as a common language. There is also a thought to be pointed out to the many creators of our  near future. Before everything is gone. Before everything is uniform. Look closely! Art doesn’t need white walls!

 这片碎石所在——中国上海的莫干山路120号,紧邻上海著名的艺术区——‘M50’或‘莫干山路50’10年前,艺术家们和画廊们陆续搬入这里的一个老厂区。长久来,这个老厂区一直饱受周边越建越高的商业大厦的吞食。逐渐地,连这片绿洲本身也不得不变地愈加商业化以维持其存在。

 这块现代的艺术区和高楼大厦也有着另一些邻居,那就是居住在120号的上海老居民。那是一个典型的传统的中国老居民区,如同我们在欧洲时可以想象的。小巧的房子挤在弄堂两边;衣服在我们头顶晾晒;居民们在家门口做饭。这些居民就这样居住了几十年,甚至当M50建起他们的小咖啡店和书店,以及来了络绎不绝的欧洲艺术客们。

 

然而,它要结束了。莫干山路120在拆毁中,并即将完全消失。大部分的居民已经离开,但在一面墙上的涂鸦仍在尖叫:“哈哈!我们还在这里!”鞋子零落在我们脚下的碎石间。墙纸也依稀可见。老上海活的场景!

 Konstantin Bayer,这位德国艺术家和空间Eigenheim(在德国魏玛是一个人们熟知的街区名字)的创造人。在他2008年大学的交换项目期间,在莫干山路120号,他创立了’Island 6 Shack’一个艺术展览的小空间。这样一个小小的空间却一直努力在传统生活与艺术间,在东方与西方间创建一种对话。

 两年后,Konstantin再次遇见剩下坚守着的老邻居们和那种不需要语言的默契。以他熟悉的方式,在这片特殊的空间形态里,Konstantin正在和旁边的一些画廊合作一个24小时的艺术项目。2000平方米的拆迁中的形态将被重新装置来展览艺术。与此同时,去指出中国发生着的这一异常迅猛的变化;也让更多人看到这一发生着的奇特的都市形态。拆迁形态,仿佛一个对照,与这个正在世博着装下崭新闪亮的大上海。

 总体上说,艺术作品和艺术家们试图要以各自的方式去体验眼前这一发生中的都市形态。事实上,真正的艺术家和创造性的人们总是抽到最短的那根签,我们的工作空间被剥夺或变得昂贵让我们不得不搬离。“莫干山路120再创造!”提供这样一个可能性,即世界来自不同地方的艺术家在这样一个发生着得形态里用艺术进行沟通,并对我们这些艺术创造者们的将来提出:在一切消失前。在一切变得程式化前。请看到!展览艺术并不一定都要在精致的白墙前!

120 Moganshan Road, Shanghai, China. Gleich neben dem Galerieviertel in Shanghai, dem so genanten M50 auf der 50 Moganshan Road, befindet sich heute eine Abrissstelle. Vor gut 10 Jahren waren Künstler und die ersten Galerien in eine alte Textilfabrik auf die 50 Moganshan Road gezogen. Der Komplex war jahrelang vom Abriss bedroht, während sich in nächster Nachbarschaft Hochhäuser in die Höhe schraubten. Über die Jahre entwickelte sich dann in der 50 Moganshan Road eine Kunstoase, die schließlich immer kommerzieller wurde und dadurch ihr Bestehen sichern konnte.

Doch die modernen Wohnblocks, die Künstler und Galerien hatten noch andere Nachbarn – die Bewohner der Hausnummer 120. Ein typisches chinesisches Viertel, genauso wie wir es uns im Westen vorstellen. Kleine Reihenhäuser schlängelten sich zwischen den engen Gassen. Die Wäsche spannte sich über einem, und vor dem Hauseingängen wurde gekocht. Die Bewohner lebten in diesem Bereich viele Jahrzehnte. Auch noch, als das M50 schon etabliert war, mitsamt seinen Cafés, Kunstbuchläden und den dazu gehörenden westlichen Kunstliebhabern.

Nun ist es vorbei. 120 Moganshan Road ist platt gewalzt worden. Die meisten Leute sind gegangen. Vereinzelt sieht man Graffitis: “Ha ha! Wir sind noch hier!” In den Ruinen liegen einzelne Schuhe, man erkennt noch Tapetenmuster. Ein Alltagsbild in Shanghai.

Der deutsche Künstler und Initiator  der  Galerie Eigenheim in Weimar, Konstantin Bayer, kannte dieses Viertel nur zu gut. In einem Abschnitt seines Auslandstudienjahres  arbeitete er dort 2008 und kuratierte einen ansässigen kleinen Ausstellungsraum, das “Island 6 Shack”. Dort gab es einen stetigen Dialog zwischen Tradition, Moderne, Kunst, Ost und West. Doch da, wo dieser Austausch stattfand, klafft nun ein Loch.

Nach zwei Jahren traf Konstantin Bayer jetzt einige der restlichen Bewohner wieder. Die schon 2008 vorhandene, gegenseitige Sympathie besteht nach wie vor. In gewohnter Manier, Kunst im alltäglichen Lebensraum entstehen zu lassen, plant Konstantin nun ein 24 Stunden Kunstprojekt auf dem Areal, bei dem auch große Galerien mit dabei sein werden. 2000 m2 braches Abrissland sollen wieder belebt werden, um Platz für Kunst zu schaffen und auf den rasanten Wandel in China aufmerksam zu machen. Die Abrissstelle wird als Gegenpart zum glitzernden Shanghai, zum brandneuen EXPO-Viertel und zahllosen geputzten Fassaden in den Blickpunkt treten.

Zunehmend wird in Shanghai von Kunst und Künstlern die Identifizierung mit der aktuell fortschreitenden Stadtentwicklung erwartet. Gerade Künstler und Kreative ziehen dabei jedoch oft den Kürzeren, denn Arbeitsraum wird einfach zerstört oder unbezahlbar. “M120 – Moganshan re-used!” ist ein Beispiel des positiven Austausches zwischen Menschen aus unterschiedlichen Teilen der Welt, den Kunst auf den Weg bringen kann. Es ist auch ein Gedanke an die vielen Schaffenden der näheren Zukunft. Bevor alles weg ist. Bevor alles einheitlich ist. Schaut genau hin! Kunst braucht keine weißen Wände!

Last weekend - BEHIND - by Thomas Rusch!


The 7 images capture disturbed emotions from their visitors just as they are representing dark and cruel thoughts and forbidden feelings them selfs.

The exhibition BEHIND also raises the  question of esthetics in our society. What we call so "beautiful" and so called "ugly". The artist Thomas Rusch doesn't follow any regulations, instead creates his own opinion in characterizing words into photographs.

BEHIND is still on view till Sunday July 18th. 

这7张图像试图去捕捉他们瞬间的情绪,以及面具后隐藏的黑暗,残忍等负面感觉。

‘后面’展览也为我们社会的审美提出质疑。什么被我们认为‘美丽’,什么又被认为‘丑陋’呢?艺术家Thomas Rusch不遵从常规,而是听从个人的思维去创造属于自己的摄影语言。

展览‘后面’持续到7月18日。
